UNESCO delegates in Chandigarh address stalled projects for Heritage conservation

Delegates from seven countries convened in Chandigarh for the 7th International Standing Conference on Le Corbusier's architectural works. The focus was on UNESCO's decision to suspend three projects at Chandigarh's Capitol Complex, a World Heritage site. The projects, including an underground parking lot and high court development, were deemed to impact the site's universal value. In response, the delegation explored alternative solutions to preserve the heritage.

Conference highlights Global Collaboration for Le Corbusier Conservation

During the conference, representatives from France, Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland, and India presented their approaches to the restoration and preservation of Le Corbusier's works. Presentations also addressed the conservation of Chandigarh's Capitol Complex, featuring pillars of democracy and iconic architectural elements.

Capitol Complex, a marvel of Le Corbusier's architecture

Chandigarh, with its Capitol Complex designed by Le Corbusier, stands as a prime example of architectural brilliance. The complex, embodying the three pillars of democracy, includes the Open Hand monument, Punjab and Haryana high court, Tower of Shadows, Geometric Hill, legislative assembly, and the secretariat. The UNESCO delegation visited key sites and is set to submit a report after further inspection, aiming to find a balance between development and the preservation of cultural heritage.
